What is the best technique for bowling a bowling ball?
Where do your fingers need to be for a hook, reverse hook, and straight bowl? Thank you very much!
I bowl from both the right and left side, but will use a delivery from the right.
1. Hook ball – Hold your bowling ball chest high for more speed or waist high for slower speed. When releasing the ball, focus on throwing it straight onto your target. Release it with thumb and both fingers under the ball and rotate slightly when letting go of the ball. Don’t force any wrist action otherwise it will spin and not rotate on the lane because the revolutions will make it hook. Your follow through should be like you just shook someone’s hand.
2. Straight ball – Stand at your target spot on the approach and seek out a direct line to the pins you want to hit. Keep your hand under the ball and hold it loosely, but not enough to lose your grip. For more speed, hold the ball chest high and for less speed, hold it waist high. Swing your arm in tune with your steps in a straight line, making sure your slide shoe points towards the pin all the way. When releasing, just swing through the ball in a straight line as well, not twisting or rotating fingers or your wrist. End with your palm pointing straight up after follow through.
3. Backup ball – Since I have trouble throwing at the 10 pin, I use this release for extreme right side spares. Just do the reverse of what the “hook ball” instructions are. Only thing is to use a slow speed delivery otherwise there will be a tendency to strain muscles or get tendonitis sooner than most athletes by flinging a bowling ball with a backup release at faster speeds.
Hope this helps!
